Welcome to the Ward Club website of Queenhithe Ward in the City of London.
Founded in 1932, the Club’s ethos is to promote neighbourly and friendly social engagements and events and to discuss matters of municipal interest.
Differing from other City of London Ward Clubs it is not just confined to the ratepayers, but also includes friends with an interest in this historic maritime area
Queenhithe Ward is one of the smallest of the 25 Wards in the City of London and encompasses an area to the south of St Paul’s Cathedral down to the river Thames. It was previously known as a trade centre with its dock used extensively by the Corn and later Fur and Tea trades. The Corn Barque is on display on the Club’s badge and on the fronts of the royal blue tops being worn by the show participants.
From its inception the principal aim of the club was to promote a social space for friendly and neighbourly discourse for not just those living in the ward but also friends and all those interested in this historic maritime area.
Bombing in the Second World War destroyed three quarters of the buildings. The intensive re-development in the 60's and 70's revealed many archaeological treasures from Saxon and Roman times. More recent developments include a beautiful mosaic featuring a time line of the history of the Thames to be found on the newly completed walkway along the river bank and the magnificent Westin Hotel with wonderful views across the river to Shakespeare’s Globe theatre. There are plans in place to extend this exceptional mosaic further, to reflect more exciting developments in the City of London.
